Dosage of Magnesium Sulfate And Its Considerations

Here is the ideal dose of Magnesium Sulfate Injection:

  • 40 mg/ml for kids

Hypomagnesemia

Adult:

  • Mild – 4 doses (1 gram each) intramuscularly (IM) after every 6 hours

Kids:

  • Intramuscular/Intravenous (IM/IV) – 25 to 50 mg per kg after every 4 to 6 hours for 3 to 4 doses
  • Oral – 100 to 200 mg per kg after every 6 hours

Toxemia of Pregnancy

  • Injected to avoid seizures related to pre-eclampsia
  • 4 to 5 grams intravenously (diluted in 250 ml NS/D5W) in a blend with (a) up to 10 g (10 mL of undiluted 50% solution) divided & administered intramuscularly (IM) into each buttock; or (b) after initial IV dose, 1 to 3 g/hour IV
